I’ve been looking at several used Lexus GX’s online, from 2020-2024, with varying mileage from 50k-80k. I wanted to see what the general consensus was for GX’s with that high of mileage to buy used? What maintenance concerns should I be aware of and ask about for a GX with that kind of mileage? I love the exterior and interior look/feel, just get weary of used cars because you never know who’s driven the vehicle first. Thanks all!

This is actually Lexus no. 4. I bought a 2021 GX 460 Premium w/ Sport Design off the showroom floor, new, a few years back, and sold that in a fit of greed for a profit during the COVID peak. I subsequently owned a 2011 LS 460 L AWD and a 2008 LS 600h L; I didn’t pick good ones and they needed a lot of money put into them. This time, I wanted something that would be an efficient, comfortable, worry-free and premium sedan for a daily driver, and the final-series GS 350 seemed like the perfect solution. Unfortunately, it was hard to find one in the right condition and with the right options, without AWD and for the right price…so I had to travel to the other side of the country to get this one and then drive it home. 29K miles. $35,749 OTD. It’s Obsidian Black over Rioja Red and has the Mark Levinson package and heated steering wheel. The only thing it’s missing that I’d want is the triple-beam headlights (which I hear were mostly only offered on the AWD ones, anyway).

Subject: Urgent Safety Concern – Driver Seatbelt Malfunction I am writing to formally report a serious safety concern regarding the driver-side seatbelt in my vehicle. The seatbelt does not retract properly and frequently becomes caught in the door. In addition, the retractor fails to pull the seatbelt back completely, leaving slack in the belt. More concerning, there have been multiple instances where the seatbelt did not properly engage or lock when braking was applied, even though it was securely fastened. I brought the vehicle to the dealership for inspection, but I was advised that this condition is “normal.” I strongly disagree with this assessment. A seatbelt that does not retract correctly or fails to lock during braking poses a significant safety risk and does not meet expected safety standards. This issue raises serious concerns about the reliability of the restraint system in the event of an accident. I am requesting a thorough inspection of the driver-side seatbelt system, including the retractor mechanism, and that any defective components be repaired or replaced immediately. Please document this concern formally and provide written confirmation of your findings and recommended corrective actions. I am very concerned for my safety and expect this issue to be handled with the urgency it deserves.

2024 Lexus GX — VISIBILITY/WIPER
The GX 550 has many people online complaining about the windshields cracking from the bottom for no reason. The crack is getting worse and close to line of sight. This is happening without something striking it.

2024 Lexus GX — ENGINE
My engine failed as I was driving down the highway at high speed. I was thankfully able to move over lanes and park safely on side of the rode before it came to a complete stop. It never turned back on. Lexus had to send a tow truck to pick it up and has been @ Dealership in Lubbock tx since 3/9/26

2021 Lexus GX — SEATS

The driver’s seat is making cracking, clicking, popping, and creaking noises from the lower seat frame, seat rail, or mounting area where the seat attaches to the vehicle body. The noise is most noticeable during braking, acceleration, turning, driving over uneven roads, and when shifting body weight in the seat. It feels as though the seat has movement or play, as if the seat rails, frame, or mounting bolts may not be fully secure. This is a safety concern because the seat is part of the occupant restraint system and is critical for proper seat belt positioning and airbag protection. If the seat frame, rails, or mounting hardware are loose, damaged, worn, or improperly secured, the seat could shift during a sudden stop or collision. In an accident, movement of the seat could reduce seat belt effectiveness, alter occupant positioning relative to airbags, increase the risk of impact with the steering wheel, dashboard, door, or center console, and increase the likelihood of head, neck, chest, back, pelvic, or leg injuries. Unexpected seat movement could also affect driver control immediately before or during a crash. This should not be treated as a simple interior rattle. The seat mounting bolts, rails, locking mechanisms, adjusters, frame components, and floor mounting points should be fully inspected for looseness, improper torque, wear, cracking, or structural failure. I have also found numerous similar owner complaints online from Lexus GX owners reporting clicking, cracking, rocking, or shifting driver seats that feel loose or unstable. Based on forum discussions and owner reports, there appear to be dozens of similar complaints, suggesting this may not be an isolated issue.

On April 17, 2025, while driving a 2024 Lexus GX 550 Luxury Plus with a minor passenger in the vehicle, the vehicle locked up without warning as I was exiting the highway. The sudden lockup caused skid marks on the tires. The failure occurred at low speed only because I had just turned off the highway — had it occurred moments earlier at highway speed, the consequences could have been fatal. The failed component appears to be the drivetrain or braking/locking system. The vehicle is currently in the possession of the Lexus dealership and is available for inspection. A Lexus field inspector has been scheduled for early May 2025. Safety was put at serious risk. A child was in the vehicle. The lockup was sudden and without warning, with no ability to anticipate or respond. This incident was preceded by two prior issues with the same vehicle: (1) approximately one month prior, a transmission concern was reported to the dealer, who attributed it to abnormal driving habits and took no corrective action; (2) on April 7, 2025, brake rotors were replaced under a recall for rotors that squeak when exposed to moisture. The problem has been confirmed by the dealership, which has retained the vehicle since April 17, 2025. I am aware of at least 8 to 10 other reported incidents involving the same model vehicle with the same lockup failure. No warning lamps or messages appeared prior to the failure.
